New Delhi. One of the world’s best footballers and 45 years ago, there was a wave of mourning in this metropolis also on the death of Pelle (PELE), who played the match in Kolkata. Pelé died in a hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil after battling cancer. It was Black Day for Mohun Bagan as it is the only club in the country against which a three -time World Cup winner Pelé took part in an exhibition match.
Due to Pelé’s death, not only Mohun Bagan, his arch rival East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting also tilted their flags in half. Mohun Bagan Secretary Devashish Dutta announced that there will be a Pelé gate in his club soon. Dutta told PTI, “We have already announced it and work on it will start soon. Hopefully it will be opened to the general public soon.

Dutta also recalled the day when Mohun Bagan was in a position to win 2–1 in the match played at Eden Gardens, but Cosmos got a penalty in the final moments, on which he had a goal and scored the match. He said, “25 September 1977 was a historic day in the history of the club. We represented the country in the match against New York Cosmos. People then knew only one football club in India and that club was Mohun Bagan. ”
West Bengal Sports Minister Arup Vishwas, including former Kolkata players and administrators of three clubs, paid tribute to the king of football on Friday evening at the historic Salt Lake Stadium. A picture of Pelé was kept in the premises of the stadium, in which people offered flowers and paid tribute to this legendary footballer. East Bengal President Pranab Dasgupta told reporters, “Pelé was the king of sports in the world. We all and sports lovers around the world are saddened by his death. It does not seem to be able to fill their place. ”
Meanwhile, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced a seven -day mourning, recalling the achievements of Pelé. AIFF general secretary Shaji Prabhakaran said, “We are all sad and remembering his achievements.” We will mourn his death for seven days. Meanwhile, the flag of AIFF will be half tilted. ”
