Is the iPhone made in India? Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said one thing about the iPhone in the Lok Sabha on Monday and discussion started. He said that the iPhone we use is not Made in India iPhone, but is an assembled in India. Rahul Gandhi also said that all these phones are made in China. Therefore, the government should focus on Made in India, not assembling. So in such a situation, the question arises whether iPhones are not really formed in India? And if it is made, which companies make it? Where have the plants set up and how much business is being given by India from iPhone? Let us understand it in a little detail.

Actually, one thing of Rahul Gandhi is absolutely true that there is no complete construction of iPhone in India. Rather, different parts from different countries are called in India and they are assembled and made a phone. Meaning that the iPhone is not India, assembled in India. So far, China has been in Apple’s center before India. However, this scenario has started shifting towards India for some time. It is possible in future that manufacturing of iPhone parts in India also start.

Three companies assembling iPhone in India-

  1. Foxconn: This Taiwan company assembles iPhone in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
  2. Pegatron Corporation: Pagatron has set up an assembly unit in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
  3. Wistron corporation: Earlier, Taiwan was a company, but now it has been acquired by the Tata Group of India. Its plant is located in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Do these companies manufacture iPhones in India?
Currently, the assembly plants of these companies are in India, while their real manufacturing units are located in China. However, these companies are being encouraged to set up manufacturing units in India under the Production Incentive (PLI) scheme of the Government of India.

Which iPhone models are being made in India?
In India, some models of iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 lines are currently getting assembled. However, these models are not being manufactured completely in India. A report in October 2024 stated that Apple is considering completely manufacturing the iPhone 16 series in India. If this happens, this will be the first time that an iPhone model outside China will be manufactured in India. Apple also said that iPhone made in India will be exported worldwide.

Reasons for shifting India from China
This was the first time when Apple talked about manufacturing his phone outside China. This move to bring production from China to India was mainly due to geopolitical tension between the US and China. Apple’s target is to increase its iPhone production in India from 10 percent to 25 percent by next year.

The iPhone 13 model made in India in 2021 arrived a few months after the launch in the global market. This difference for iPhone 14 in 2022 decreased to less than two weeks. In 2023, Apple produced the iPhone 15 together in India and China, but the models made in India were available only at the local level on the first day. India now contributes 14 percent of Apple’s global production, which was 7 percent last year. By 2025, Apple wants to increase it to 25 percent. In 2024, the three companies producing in India created iPhones worth Rs 1.20 trillion in India, out of which iPhones worth Rs 85,000 crore were exported. Apple remains the number 1 in mobile exports from India and is also a major partner of the PLI scheme of the government, which is promoting local production and exports.

Where are the parts of the iPhone formed?

  1. Semiconductor chip: Taiwan’s company makes TSMC.
  2. Display: It is made by Samsung and LG in South Korea.
  3. memory chip: SK HYNix (South Korea) and Toshiba (Japan) are made.
  4. Camera: The Sony company of Japan forms.
  5. Other parts: Come from many countries including Germany, America, China.
  6. Assembly Center: The largest assembly hub is China, where Foxconn and Pagtron iPhone assembled.

How to get the tag of Made in India?
In India, a product is not only enough assembling to get the Made in India tag, but it has to meet some government standards. For this, 35-50 percent Value Addition is necessary. If only imported parts are added to India, it is considered as assembled in India. According to the rules of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and Customs (CBIC), procedures like production, molding, machining are necessary at the local level. Therefore, the tag of Made in India is found only when most of the construction process is done in India.
